Winter doesn’t officially begin until December 22nd, but sweater weather has been in full effect since October. Sometimes the cold temperatures and heavy rain can make life less enjoyable than the usual. But there are upsides to winter: cozy nights by the fireplace, hot chocolate, heated seats in cars, and sweaters. I’m not talking about crewnecks and hoodies or the hipster Christmas sweaters, but the chunky knit sweaters. The kind you can layer over a basic shirt and jeans and be good-to-go.
I think sweaters are a great investment. When living in Portland they’re a necessity and will never go out of style. I love sweaters so much I had to donate a trash bag full so that I would have room for more in my closet and dresser.
I definitely have my go-to brands or retailers for my wardrobe staples, including my sweaters. My favorite sweaters are by CPO Provisions, which is a Portland based company and are only sold at Urban Outfitters. The silhouette of the sweaters is pretty contemporary being a little oversized making them great for layering. Some of the CPO sweaters either have side or boat necks that give them a cool, modern feel.
Every single CPO sweater I have is rib stitched, giving them volume, but is still pretty light in weight. Because of their stitching, the sweaters are airy and breathable so you don’t get too hot as you transition from outside to inside. The stitching also makes the sweaters stretchable, giving you room to move,. which is important when you’re layering over your sweater - even with a thick jacket or coat over your sweater you can still move within those layers.
The other cool aspect of these sweaters is the yarn that they use. The colors are very wintery; navy, black, white and gray with hints of specks in them, which add texture and a little color; they go with everything. When it comes to winter I don’t mess around with bright colors, I’d rather be subtle with darks and neutrals.
Again, you can only get these exclusively from Urban Outfitters, which we all know can be overpriced. But I bought all these sweaters from the months of March and June when they were out of season and on clearance. Originally these can go for $60, but I bought these for $10-$20!
I love to throw these on when I’m on the go. This past weekend had some great weather- it was cold but dry and sunny, perfect for bringing out the sweaters. For walking around and exploring the city, I went for a more casual look. Over my sweater I wore my Old Navy Parka to protect me from the wind. It was also dry out so I paired my sweater with some denim joggers also from Urban Outfitters and my Nike sneakers that I got from the Nordstrom fall clearance sale. If you wanted to dress these up, you could wear a buttoned up shirt underneath your sweater and pair it with some slacks and oxfords. You can never go wrong with sweaters, all that matters is that you’re comfortable, warm and simply stylish.
